swimming is hard. way harder than any other sport i've done before. i was reading no limits by michael phelps and there is a part in there where he says his friends always challenged him on just how hard swimming really is; they think it couldn't be that difficult but Phelps backs it up with the world record stats for various distances in the water versus on the running track. he's got a point. he also challenged his friends to show up at his workouts and try to make it through the warm up but no one ever showed up. nice!i think swimming is hard because there are so many individual things you need to think about and get them all right so that you are efficient. in my case, i'm just trying to get a few of them to be decent so that i stay above water. focusing on how far you are pushing & the position of your hand at the extension or how high your elbows are is tough when you are just trying to make sure you are sucking down a mouthful of water ever time you turn your head. but that's where training equipment comes in...
this morning i met a new piece of training equipment called the stoke mate. it's this hard plastic loop that you slip your hand through and it positions your wrists and hands correctly. it forces you to think about shrugging up with your shoulders, keeping your elbows high, and then once you get into the pull it gets you to bend your elbow and pull with your forearm and hand. it's pretty cool, and feels really weird
